Eviction Prevention

Preventing Homelessness Before it Happens

We know that the best way to fight homelessness is to stop it before it starts. That’s why we provide eviction prevention services for families who have already stayed with us and are now working hard to maintain stable housing.

What We Do

Our eviction prevention program helps former shelter clients who are at risk of losing their housing by:

  • Covering urgent expenses such as past-due rent, late fees, and court costs

  • Providing legal advocacy in partnership with Tippecanoe County Legal Aid and other community agencies including assisting with eviction expungement to give families a fresh start on the rental market

  • Connecting to wraparound resources like utility assistance, workforce support, and case management

Why it Matters

For families who have already worked their way out of shelter, a single financial crisis can threaten everything. By stepping in with eviction prevention support, we:

  • Protect children from re-entering homelessness

  • Save families from the trauma of displacement

  • Keep stability in place while parents continue working, kids keep going to school, and families stay together

  • Reduce the long-term costs to the community

A Note on Changing Federal Priorities

In past years, GLFS provided eviction prevention to the broader community, even to families who had never stayed at our shelter. Unfortunately, federal funding priorities shifted unexpectedly, and those resources were cut. Today, we are only able to offer eviction prevention to families who are former GLFS shelter clients.

We remain committed to advocating for funding that would allow us to expand this service again in the future.
